Be a mentor

Our mentors are mature, energetic, empathetic, good listeners, caring, able to maintain confidences, able to provide guidance, and, above all, like working with teens. Mentors are assigned a student to work with and are expected to spend at least 4 hours a month with that student. If you would like to be a mentor for YO:Durham, contact our mentor coordinator at mentor@yodurham.org.

Provide an internship

Students work 6-10 hours per week from September to May. YO:Durham provides student scholarships for companies who would like to participate, but who are unable to pay the stipend. Continuous support is provided to employers. Our employers are expected to:

  • Convey value and satisfaction of work
  • Recognize characteristics typical of teens
  • Provide feedback on student progress to YO:Durham on a regular basis
  • Provide meaningful workplace experience
  • On-site job mentor or supervisor

If you are interested in providing an internship, please contact us at intern@yodurham.org

Lead a workshop at Summer Career Academy

Each year, YO:Durham's entering students start with a comprehensive, six week program—Summer Career Academy. For six hours each day, students take life skills classes, workshops, and seminars, and receive mentoring. Enrolled teens, who may lack professional role models, benefit from seeing and experiencing how knowledge workers interact, think, work, and present themselves. The focus is on fostering vital competences in communication, conflict resolution, planning and problem solving.
If you have skills in one or more of these areas and would like to give a talk or presentation in Summer Career Academy, please contact us at SCA@yodurham.org.

Other opportunities

Aside from a very few paid positions, YO:Durham relies on volunteers for almost all our activities. We frequently need volunteers to perform administrative tasks, plan events, and raise funds, among other things. If you would like help us build our organization, contact us at yodurham@yodurham.org
