Reco Foushee, Class of 2009
My experiences in the YO:Durham program have been tremendous. When I first started the program last year, I wasn't as willing to open up because of me being a private person. By attending mentoring workshops, doing an internship, & helping out with other activities of YO:Durham, I've learned more people skills. I'm still a rather private person, but I am now able talk to people who I don't know & get to know people which are great to me in the job field because I work with customers all the time. I will be attending North Carolina Central University in August 2009 and I will major in journalism. I would like to give a special thanks to Ms. Blackmon, Ms. Krystal, & Mr. O.G.!
Brittany Dunn, Class of 2008
YO:Durham has prepared me for the job world, going through interviews and knowing what to wear and what to do in the job world. YO:Durham has also kept me occupied during the year with different events and activities. It has made me a better person to others, and has kept me out of trouble during the school year. I really appreciated having the YO:Durham experience. My college plans include attending North Carolina Central University and majoring in Hospitality and Tourism.
Tyneiqua S. M. Mercer, Class of 2009
Being apart of the YO:Durham program has taught me a lot of things that are now helping me to be a better person. During the summer academy, I learned proper business language, meaning how to talk when in a business setting, what to wear on certain occasions. I learned how to type a resume, a cover letter and a thank you letter. The purpose of the cover letter is to make you're application different from the others. I started using these new skills when the summer academy was over and YO:Durham provided internships for all the participants. I can truly say these skills helped me start a beautiful and strong foundation. All I have to do now is build on this foundation.
Thank you YO:Durham for helping me build my foundation, gain confidence, and for just starting this program!
Essence McClinton, 2009
During my time in the program, I met a variety of people. I met people that I thought I would never meet, specifically my YO:Durham peers. We have a lot in common with each other and still talk to this day.
The summer portion of the program was the best part. During that summer, we visited colleges, did community service, and completed teamwork tasks. We also had an opportunity to talk and meet CEOs, the mayor, producers, football coaches, nurses, teachers, writers & authors of books and many more. After the summer internship, we all were assigned internships at other corporations and businesses. I was placed at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of North Carolina. I really enjoyed my internship. The work environment was great and my Supervisor and co-workers made it easy. While there I edited documents, created spreadsheets in excel, sent off packages and letters, and in my free time I took online typing classes. Whatever I did they allowed me to feel secure and they supported me. It was one of the most memorable times in my life. Everything I learned about the appropriate way to assert yourself in a business setting was learned through my internship at BCBS and the YO:Durham Summer Career Academy.
If it wasn't for this internship, I would still be uneducated on how to act, how to dress, how to speak, and how not to chew gum when you go to an interview. Without these experiences, I would still be without a job. With the help of the YO:Durham program, I got accepted into DUKE for another internship working on cancer research. Thank you YO:Durham.
Tevin Armstrong
My name is Tevin Armstrong and I'm 15 years old. I go to C.E. Jordan High School and I love working and helping people. I learned how to be a better leader and how to not get frustrated. YO:Durham has enhanced my life. We were taught interview skills, what to wear, etiquette and how to make a resume. What I learned from YO:Durham, I will take with me into my future career. I plan to go to college and would like to attend pharmacy school at UNC-Chapel Hill. My internship has been in the obstetrics and gynecology research office at Duke University Medical Center, with some time spent in the pharmacy lab at the VA Hospital shadowing a pharmacist. I will continue to work at Duke this summer, though not as a part of the YO:Durham program.
Alena Glenn
YO:Durham has made a major difference in my life. Last year I had a lot of discipline referrals. This year I have not had any. I am a rising senior at Hillside High School. I plan to take courses at Durham Tech so I can be a certified nurse assistant by the time I enroll at East Carolina University for a degree in nursing. My internship was at Blue Cross Blue shield of NC where I discovered that nurses are employed in many ways and places beyond working in a hospital. I have learned a lot, met new people, and experienced new things. At Blue Cross, I was exposed to a corporate work environment for the first time.
