Vice-President Chuck Byrd opened the meeting with the DCIA Affirmation.  Minutes from the August meeting were approved.

Nancye Bryan talked about outreach and support for people with mental illnesses.

Chuck Clifton made a presentation for support of keeping the Lakewood YMCA open, addressing its inclusiveness and community involvement in root neighborhoods in Durham, renovating the building.

 

12:23pm-12:24pm: Families First will hold a training/orientation for congregations willing to sponsor families on Saturday, Sept. 29 9:30-3pm, at First Chronicles Community Church.

Jenny Schafer spoke about CROP and Church World Service work to assist hurricane victims.  She also announced that the next Durham CROP Walk will be March 16, 2008.

Marcia Owen announced that the Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham would host an event about applying for federal funds for community programs on September 27th..

Spencer Bradford announced an ecumenical vigil against violence on September 21, to mark the International Day of Prayer for Peace; the service starts at 6:45 pm at Asbury Temple United Methodist Church on Alston Ave.

Winnie Breeden and Nick McKoy will be celebrating the end of their 2-year project coordinating assistance and support for Hurricane Katrina victims in the community.  Celebration takes place on October 11, 2007 from 6pm-8:30pm; they talked about their experiences and expressed gratitude

The weekend of October 11-13, 2007 is the Children Defense Fund’s annual Children’s Sabbath observance.  Congregations are encouraged to support YO-Durham as a way to mark it.

 

12:45pm-12:55pm

Updates on YO Durham:  Krystal Foxx announced mentor training, Oct. 6 from 10-3pm (two separate trainings).  Susan Blackmon talked about internships, students needing transportation volunteers, and the need for more mentors.

 

12:55pm-1:05pm

Bill Stokes from the Boy Scouts presented information about scouting and the role of congregations in hosting and providing volunteer leadership for scouts.  Kevin Rumsey and Renee Cunningham also were present representing the Scouts.

 

1:05pm-1:15pm

Spencer Bradford announced the next meeting to be October 16, 2007 from 11:45am-1:00pm at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, on Hillandale Rd.  Prayer requests were shared, and the meeting closed with a prayer.
