Minutes of the Board Meeting of Durham Congregations In Action

April 20, 2004

Watts Street Baptist Church

 

1.                  Rev. Nancy Ferree-Clark welcomed the assembly.

 

2.                  Rev. Diane Hill, Associate Minister at Watts Street Baptist Church gave

a brief history of the church, stating that it was built in 1924 at the present site. She then offered an opening prayer.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          

  1.       The DCIA Affirmation was read in unison.

 

  1.       Minutes of the March Board Meeting were accepted.                           

 

  1.       The March Financial Statement was presented.

 

  1.       Dominique Davis summarized the work of the Durham Literacy Center and

introduced David Jones, tutor and Johnny Jaby, student. Johnny could not read as an adult. He is now 50 and reads beautifully. David advised that the DLC serves 300-500 people annually. Volunteer tutors are critical to the DLC’s success, and undergo 13 hours of training. The next training session is in August.

 

  1.       Anna Lee Mosley, co-chair of the Religious Coalition for a Non-violent

Durham, asked for support of the Million Mom March on Mother’s Day, May 9.

This gathering will remember those slain by guns and seek renewal of the Ban on Assault Weapons which expires in September. DCIA endorsed this March.

 

  1.      Rev. Laura Benson advised of the annual Golf Marathon for Durham Interfaith

Hospitality Network on Monday, June 7. This event lasts from 7 a.m. to dusk and provides an opportunity to play 100 holes. Meals and prizes are provided. The cost of $300 is waived in return for a pledge of $2500. Contact Laura (682-2846) or Walt Sliva (845-0150).   

 

  1.      Bob Newlin is Chair of DCIA’s Strategic Planning Committee. The purpose of

this Committee is to clarify What DCIA does and Who we are. Henry Gest, who ably assisted DCIA last year, will continue to serve as Facilitator. Bob is seeking 10-12 people to serve on this Committee, and develop a Plan by the end of summer.

 

  1.      Jenny Shafer, CROPWALK Coordinator, thanked all those who walked

and supported CROPWALK on March 28.

 

  1.      Lloyd  Schmeidler advised of an upcoming benefit concert at St. Philip’s         

      Episcopal Church.

 

 

 

 

 

  1.      Reverend Joe Harvard advised that Dan Hudgins is retiring from Durham

 Durham Social Services after 27 years. Urban Ministries of Durham is holding a special service in Dan’s honor on April 29th from 3 – 6 p.m. Contributions are invited for the Daniel C. Hudgins Scholarship Fund to benefit low income children.      

 

  1.      Lori Khamala advised that migrant farm workers need hats, sheets,

gloves,and bandannas. Please contact Lori at 489-4485.

 

12.     Kaaren Johanson advised that the government of Viet Nam increased its persecution of the Montenard people after they peacefully demonstrated on Easter Sunday. Kaaren is collecting signatures in support of a worship service and press conference on April 21 in Washington, DC.

 

13.     Prayer Requests were asked for Vonnie Jones, Jesse Smith and those

incarcerated, The Montenards, the People of Iraq, Rev. Pebbles Lindsay-Lucas.
